What is SGMA ?

The Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) is composed of three bills ; Assembly Bill 1739, Senate Bill 1168, and Senate Bill 1319 passed by the California legislature and signed by Governor Brown in 2014.  The intent of the Act is for local public agencies to form Groundwater Sustainability Agencies (GSA) which are responsible for preparing and administering Groundwater Sustainability Plans in order to manage the use of groundwater on a sustainable basis.  The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) is responsible for implementation of SGMA.
